FIT-AD SMART Research Study
FIT-AD SMART Trial is a 12-month study that is testing the impact of various physical activity types on cognitive and physical outcomes in older adults with early-stage Alzheimer's disease. Arizona State University researchers seek to discover the most effective approaches to slowing cognitive decline in people with early stage Alzheimer's, possibly through exercise.
Location
FIT-AD SMART is looking for older adults living in the Greater Phoenix Area. We operate out of a few different locations; Arizona State University in Downtown Phoenix, YMCAs, and Banner Alzheimer's Institute.

How to Participate
Getting Started
To get started, you’ll complete a 4-step process: an initial phone call, an in-person meeting, medical clearance, and a cycling exercise test and MRI brain scan.
You're Enrolled!
Over 12 months, you’ll complete 5 rounds of assessments – at the beginning, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. Each round of assessments includes a set of physical and mental tests, a fasted blood draw, and an exercise test. You’ll also receive a total of 3 MRI brain scan - at the beginning, at 6 months, and again at 12 months.
Ready to Get Moving?
After completing the first round of assessments, you will be randomly assigned to either a cycling or stretching group. Our friendly staff will meet in-person with you 3 days a week to supervise your activity. At the 3-month assessments, those in the cycling group may be instructed to continue, OR you may be randomly reassigned to either a high intensity interval cycling group or a combined cycling and strength-building group for the remaining 3 months. Those assigned to the stretching group will carry on in their stretching group for the entire study.
